Weekending in the San Juan Islands: Internet’s Hard to Find

SJII           San Juans aerial.jpg

At the risk of having OncTalk sound like a self-indulgent diary of my daily events, I just wanted to let people know I’m in the San Juan Islands for the weekend, off the Pacific Coast near Seattle, with my family.  It’s a fabulous place for a weekend (or much longer) away, but people don’t come here for the fabulous internet access.  In fact, things like internet access and cell phone coverage are pretty scant, which to many is part of the appeal. You don’t see a lot of people with Blackberry devices on the waistbands of their shorts while hiking and biking here.

The point is that I happen to be in a rare place where there is wireless internet access, but I may not be able to check in and respond to questions and comments until I return to Seattle tomorrow evening.   Please feel free to leave your questions, comments, and suggestions, and just know not to take it personally if it takes more than a day for a response.

And now, I’m going to put down my laptop.

See any dolphins or seals from the ferry? We had pretty good luck with that crossing Grays Harbor on a passenger ferry a couple of weeks ago, and I imagine they’re pretty plentiful in the Strait this time of year as well. Hope you had a great time!–Neil

Thanks, I did. I actually flew there and back in order to minimize the travel time and spend as much time with as possible with my wife and kids, who were already there and are still there for a few more days.

They said that on the ferry they took last week, an Orca pod was nearby that most people on board saw. Unfortunately, my wife and three kids, including a 10 month old son, were among the least mobile on the ferry and missed the excitement.

    Dr. West,
We are privalaged to live in the same neck of the woods. The San Juans are one of our favorite getaways.
