Well, folks, I’m heading half-way around the world to Seoul, Korea, for the World Lung Cancer Conference, in Seoul, Korea. I’ll be on the faculty, speaking at a workshop on clinical trial design with targeted therapies for lung cancer, and then also giving a slide presentation on a small trial I did with an agent called Asentar, or DN-101, in combination with taxotere for second line treatment of NSCLC (results were encouraging enough, but it’s not clear that it’s ever going to be developed further in lung cancer any time soon).
Of course, it will take me most of a day to get there, and another very long time to get back. In between, I’ll try to check in as often as I get the opportunity with a decent internet connection, but it’s hard to know what to expect. They’re pretty well connected in Korea, so I’m hopeful I’ll be able to check in and respond frequently, but if there’s a break from my usual routine, you’ll know why. I’ll be gone for close to a week, and I’ll be sure to keep people posted about new information presented there.

Enjoy the trip. Hope, it is a rewarding conference for all of the great minds including you assembling in Korea. I am curious about a compound from Pfizer PF-00299804 among others. Would appreciate hearing your views on significant break-throughs.

Please keep an open ear on the drug “Stimuvax” by Merck KGaA. They are supposed to give a 4 or 5 year survival update for stage III patients in a phase II trial. Tell us what you think. Thanks.

Dr. West: I know the conference is just starting now (probably about right now if I’ve got my time zones right), but you might want to know that it’s already gotten a bit of play in the general media. The story is about how the conference will be the unveiling site for the new staging system for NSCLC. Naturally, the story claims that this will result in signficant changes in treatment, with many people becoming eligible for surgery who would not have been eligible before (and others being spared treatments that probably wouldn’t have helped).
Sounds overly optimistic to me (hopefully, regardless of formal staging, you and your colleagues have been mostly making the right calls already).–Neil

The new staging system should be unveiled here, and I’ll cover some highlights. I’m sure it will have some treatment implications, and I’ll cover them as I learn more.
Today is a pre-conference day, with a few workshops, including one I’m speaking at. There are several symposia tomorrow, and the official opening is Sunday evening, which will be Satuday afternoon in the US. But the actual new content, the real presentations, won’t be out until Monday here, at the earliest. So don’t think I’m holding out on you if you don’t hear any real news until a couple of days from now.

Gosh Dr West…I just realized that you were on your way to Korea when you took the time to answer my posts…thank you so much …You are the ‘perfect Dr’ ..so caring for ‘us’.
