Lung Cancer Awareness Event with Focus on Screening Issues, in Seattle

SCI lung cancer awareness event

November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month, and we need to scrap to ensure that lung cancer gets anything close to the attention it deserves.  At my own institution, Swedish Cancer Institute in Seattle, we’re hosting an event on November 13, 2007 from 6 - 7:30 PM that will focus on early stage lung cancer and screening issues.  In addition to Dr. Ralph Aye, a thoracic surgeon who leads our thoracic program and will serve as moderator, the evening will feature presentations, some discussion, and Q&A with the following guests:

- Laurie Fenton Ambrose, who leads the Lung Cancer Alliance

- Dr. David Yankelovitz, one of the lead physicians of the I-ELCAP screening study and radiologist at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University in NYC

- Dr. Steve Kirtland, a pulmonologist at Virginia Mason Medical Center, also in Seattle, and president of the Washington Thoracic Society, and

- Cecilia Izzo, lung cancer survivor

I realize that most readers aren’t within driving distance of Seattle, but for those who are, we’d love to have you there (to register and get more information, please call 206-386-2502).  In fact, bring a friend, especially if your friend is a TV newsperson!  Lung cancer needs attention!

For those of you who are in other parts of the world, many institutions have their own educational programs and awareness events.  Please ask about them, and if you’re at a major center where they don’t have any awareness events, please ask them why not and tell them we need them!

    Dr. West:

What a wonderful thing that your Institute is doing! I so wish I could attend, but as you stated, the distance is indeed a factor.

What a good idea to motivate other places to get involved and I’ll see if anything is planned in Edmonton.

Any chance you could get the meeting on the internet for those of us who can’t be there is person? I know, it’s huge to ask, but just wondering.

I don’t know about this year, but I can promise that this is the kind of thing that we’ll be working on building up in the new, bigger non-profit. I think we’ll be able to have actual web-based meetings and archive the content for people to download and see slides along with synchronized lecture/discussion at any time.
