Transition to GRACE Forums

It’s getting to that time of actually moving it all over to GRACE.  The web guys are planning to make a few more edits early this week, then update the posts to add content put on OncTalk over the last few weeks, and then have new content go over to GRACE, which you’ll notice is divided into different subjects, both in division of the posts and in the fourm questions.  Lung cancer is a big one, but now Leah and potentially other contributors will have a separate social work/coping with cancer section, complementary medicine will have posts in that separate section, questions about the various cancer treatments and supportive care is on its own section, etc.  One key reason that sections on symptom management and side-effects of treatments are a distinct section rather than part of the lung cancer section is that pain control or side effects of tarceva or chemo or whatever are generally the same for a lung cancer patient as well as a colon cancer patient.  Eventually I may have experts in other types of cancer join in on a separate subject section for colon cancer, prostate cancer, etc., and this way it’s possible for everyone to share access to tips on managing side effects or cancer symptoms.

In anticipation of the move to the new site, I wanted to give people a chance to navigate the new forums and leave some questions/comments, just testing the waters before we freeze the OncTalk forum section and leave it for browsing but no new threads or comments on existing threads.  Importantly, the old forums will be searchable from the GRACE site, which will return results of content on both the GRACE site and the OncTalk forum pages.

Your current log-in should work.  Once in, it should now be much easier to edit your profile, add an avatar, and now send private e-mail to other users.   We can change the structure and certainly fix bugs (and I’m sure there will be some bugs) — just let us know.  The forum page is here.   Feel free to navigate around the rest of the site, but know that there are still a few small edits we’re making (including updating the supporter list, so for those of you who have donated in the last month, know that the page will be updated to recognize you within the next 48 hours).

So look around, please feel free and quite encouraged to leave questions and comments there.  For the next few days at least, I’ll plan to check and answer questions at both the OncTalk and GRACE forums.  But know that in a short time we’re moving exclusively to GRACE, so the OncTalk threads will be readable but frozen.

Thanks, and post at the GRACE or OncTalk forums, or e-mail me at west@cancergrace.org if you have questions, comments, or bugs to report.

The tech folks think they figured out the problem. There is apparently an overly aggressive spam filter, which they have fixed, I’m told.

THANK YOU for bringing this up and describing it so well. Now we can follow up and eliminate such problems before we’re completely moved over.

I hope you don’t find many other notable problems, but if you do, please describe them here, and we’ll follow-up ASAP.

Now it’s happened to me too! I just wrote a long post on “Disappearing messages/topics” which now shows on the “Recent Forum Posts” list on the GRACE Portal Page, but clicking on that brings me to a collapsed topic with no message, and backing up to “Problems” Tell us, and we’ll try to fix it” shows NO topic named “Disappearing messages/topics.” But you CAN read my message by using the “recent posts” link explained in the message I was trying to post to the GRACE Forums, quoted here:

I’ve found that the most reliable way for me to read new messages is to go to the Forum Home page, scroll to the bottom, and click the link “View the most recent posts on the forum” which takes me to:

    http://cancergrace.org/forums/index.php?action=recent

One good thing about that link is that the messages stay there regardless of whether I’ve viewed them before, and there are multiple pages which seem to contain every message posted to any of the forum areas. In fact, it’s so useful that I’ve made that my default bookmark for checking new messages. From there I can read the message (minus whatever might be in the signature block), check the user’s profile, reply to the message with or without quoting it, and request notification of replies. Using the links in the tinted line, I can go directly to the forum category, the forum board, or the forum topic which includes that message. Very handy, and apparently the ONLY way to see certain messages. I noticed a disappearing topic problem a few days ago when Cal wrote about “Default displays” but there was no such topic listed in the “OncTalk to GRACE Errors/Bugs > Problems? Tell us, and we’ll try to fix it” board. I could read Cal’s post on the recent posts list, currently here:

    http://cancergrace.org/forums/index.php?action=recent;start=40

but if I clicked the link to the “Default displays” topic, everything was collapsed and there was no message to read:

    http://cancergrace.org/forums/index.php?topic=42.msg132#msg132

Also, if I went to the “Problems” Tell us, and we’ll try to fix it” board, there was no “Default displays” topic listed. I tried both Firefox and Internet Explorer.

I thought that was a fluke until this morning, where on the GRACE Home page, under Latest Forum Posts, I saw a new topic “Alimta and Erbitux — clinical trial” that I wanted to read. But clicking on the link took me to a collapsed display with no message to read, and backing up to “Clinical Trials and Drug Development” showed there was no such topic listed within that board!

    http://cancergrace.org/forums/index.php?topic=62.msg216#msg216

However, by using the “recent posts” technique above, I was able to read the new post from Cal (Carole). Those are the only messages I’ve noticed that have that problem, but there may be others since I haven’t checked very many. It does seem odd that both of the disappearing topics were started by the same user, I checked Cal’s profile, which shows 2 topics started and 2 messages posted, but the link to her recent posts shows no matches.

    Looking for an explanation…

I have been able to access the Grace websites a couple of times today but tonight I can not log in. It is stating that my password is invalid. Sorry for the trouble.

FYI I’m still not able to log in to GRACE under my onctalk user name and password. It’s telling me my password is not valid.

I was hoping it was all settled, but no such luck — better to know now. We’re going to try to figure out the issue. If others have a similar issue, please let us know.
